Chapter 3: Nouns (Naming Words)


3.1 What is a Noun?

  • A noun is a word that names a person, place, animal, or thing.

  • Nouns are called naming words.

Examples:

  • Person → teacher, doctor, Ravi

  • Place → school, park, Delhi

  • Animal → dog, cat, elephant

  • Thing → book, pen, table

Exercise 1: Underline the nouns in the sentences:

  1. The dog is barking.

  2. My father is reading a newspaper.

  3. We went to the park.

Answers:

  1. dog

  2. father, newspaper

  3. park


3.2 Types of Nouns

There are four main types of nouns for Class 3:


3.2.1 Common Nouns

  • Name general persons, places, animals, or things.

  • Not capitalized unless at the beginning of a sentence.

Examples: boy, city, school, cat

Exercise 2: Identify common nouns:

  1. The girl is singing.

  2. I saw a lion in the zoo.

Answers:

  1. girl

  2. lion, zoo


3.2.2 Proper Nouns

  • Name specific people, places, or things.

  • Always begin with a capital letter.

Examples: Ravi, Delhi, Christmas, Taj Mahal

Exercise 3: Identify proper nouns:

  1. I live in Mumbai.

  2. My friend’s name is Anjali.

Answers:

  1. Mumbai

  2. Anjali


3.2.3 Abstract Nouns

  • Name feelings, qualities, or ideas that cannot be seen or touched.

Examples: happiness, honesty, courage, love

Exercise 4: Identify abstract nouns:

  1. Honesty is the best policy.

  2. She is full of courage.

Answers:

  1. Honesty

  2. courage


3.2.4 Collective Nouns

  • Name a group of people, animals, or things.

Examples:

  • People → team, family, class

  • Animals → herd, flock, pack

  • Things → bunch, set

Exercise 5: Identify collective nouns:

  1. The flock of birds is flying.

  2. Our class is going on a trip.

Answers:

  1. flock

  2. class


3.3 Singular and Plural Nouns

  • Singular → one (cat, dog, book)

  • Plural → more than one (cats, dogs, books)

Rules:

  1. Add -s → dog → dogs

  2. Add -es → bus → buses

  3. Change y → ies → baby → babies

  4. Irregular → child → children, man → men

Exercise 6: Change to plural:

  1. fox → _______

  2. baby → _______

  3. man → _______

Answers:

  1. foxes

  2. babies

  3. men


3.4 Gender of Nouns

  • Masculine → boy, father, king

  • Feminine → girl, mother, queen

  • Neuter → table, book, pen

  • Common → teacher, doctor, friend

Exercise 7: Write the opposite gender:

  1. King → _______

  2. Girl → _______

  3. Father → _______

Answers:

  1. Queen

  2. Boy

  3. Mother


3.5 Fun Activity: Noun Hunt

  • Look around your room and list 5 nouns of each type:

    • Person → _______

    • Place → _______

    • Animal → _______

    • Thing → _______
