Chapter 2: Words and Sentences


2.1 What is a Word?

  • A word is a group of letters that has meaning.

  • Words are the building blocks of sentences.

Examples:

  • Cat, Dog, Sun, School, Book

Rules:

  1. A word always starts with a letter.

  2. Words are separated by spaces in a sentence.

Exercise 1: Identify the words in the sentence:

  1. The cat is sleeping.

  2. I like apples.

Answers:

  1. The, cat, is, sleeping

  2. I, like, apples


2.2 What is a Sentence?

  • A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete idea.

  • Every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation.

Examples:

  • The sun rises in the east.

  • I am going to school.

  • Wow! That is amazing!


2.3 Types of Sentences

  1. Declarative Sentence (Statement)

    • Tells something or gives information.

    • Ends with a full stop (.)

    • Example: I like mangoes.

  2. Interrogative Sentence (Question)

    • Asks a question.

    • Ends with a question mark (?)

    • Example: What is your name?

  3. Imperative Sentence (Command/Request)

    • Gives orders, commands, or requests.

    • Ends with a full stop (.) or exclamation (!)

    • Example: Please close the door.

  4. Exclamatory Sentence (Strong Feeling)

    • Shows surprise, happiness, or anger.

    • Ends with an exclamation mark (!)

    • Example: Wow! That is amazing!


2.4 Parts of a Sentence

  1. Subject: Tells who or what the sentence is about.

  2. Predicate: Tells what the subject does or is.

Example:

  • The dog (subject) is barking (predicate).

Exercise 2: Identify subject and predicate:

  1. The boy is reading a book.

  2. My mother is cooking dinner.

Answers:

  1. Subject: The boy | Predicate: is reading a book

  2. Subject: My mother | Predicate: is cooking dinner


2.5 Capital Letters and Punctuation

  • Always start a sentence with a capital letter.

  • End the sentence with proper punctuation:

    • Full stop (.) → statement

    • Question mark (?) → question

    • Exclamation mark (!) → strong feeling

Exercise 3: Correct the sentences:

  1. the cat is sleeping

  2. what is your name

  3. wow that is beautiful

Answers:

  1. The cat is sleeping.

  2. What is your name?

  3. Wow! That is beautiful!


2.6 Making Sentences

  • A sentence should have at least a subject and a verb.

  • Add adjectives, adverbs, or other words to make it more interesting.

Examples:

  • Simple: The cat sleeps.

  • Interesting: The black cat sleeps quietly on the chair.

Exercise 4: Make sentences from these words:

  1. dog / runs / fast

  2. sun / rises / east

  3. I / like / ice cream

Answers:

  1. The dog runs fast.

  2. The sun rises in the east.

  3. I like ice cream.


2.7 Fun Activity: Sentence Puzzle

  • Rearrange the words to make a correct sentence:

  1. book / I / reading / am

  2. garden / in / The / flowers / are

Answers:

  1. I am reading a book.

  2. The flowers are in the garden.
