Chapter 2: Words and Sentences
2.1 What is a Word?

A word is a group of letters that has meaning.

Words are the building blocks of sentences.
Examples:

Cat, Dog, Sun, School, Book
Rules:

A word always starts with a letter.

Words are separated by spaces in a sentence.
Exercise 1: Identify the words in the sentence:

2.2 What is a Sentence?

A sentence is a group of words that expresses a complete idea.

Every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with punctuation.
Examples:

2.3 Types of Sentences

Declarative Sentence (Statement)

Tells something or gives information.

Ends with a full stop (.)

Example: I like mangoes.

Interrogative Sentence (Question)

Asks a question.

Ends with a question mark (?)

Example: What is your name?

Imperative Sentence (Command/Request)

Gives orders, commands, or requests.

Ends with a full stop (.) or exclamation (!)

Exclamatory Sentence (Strong Feeling)

Shows surprise, happiness, or anger.

Ends with an exclamation mark (!)

Example: Wow! That is amazing!

2.4 Parts of a Sentence

Subject: Tells who or what the sentence is about.

Predicate: Tells what the subject does or is.
Example:

The dog (subject) is barking (predicate).
Exercise 2: Identify subject and predicate:

The boy is reading a book.

My mother is cooking dinner.

2.5 Capital Letters and Punctuation

Always start a sentence with a capital letter.

End the sentence with proper punctuation:

Full stop (.) → statement

Question mark (?) → question

Exclamation mark (!) → strong feeling

Exercise 3: Correct the sentences:

2.6 Making Sentences

A sentence should have at least a subject and a verb.

Add adjectives, adverbs, or other words to make it more interesting.
Examples:
