C4 MATHS CH-4

"Community Lunch Planning – Understanding Numbers in Thousands"

Scenario:

Jaspreet and Gulnaz are planning a community lunch at their neighbourhood Gurudwara. They expect around 1,000 people to attend. They keep a record of the number of people who come during different time slots and of the food donations received.

Questions:

  1. Interpreting Place Value:
Jaspreet received a donation of wheat flour written as “4 Ones + 7 Tens”.

    • What is the total number of wheat flour packets Jaspreet received?

    • Show your calculation.

  2. Comparing Quantities:
    During the lunch:

    • 52 people ate at 9:00am.

    • 145 people ate at 10:00am.

    • 325 people ate at 11:00am.

    • 508 people ate at 12:00pm.

At which time slot did the fewest and most people eat?
    Explain your answer.

  3. Reasoning with Large Numbers:
Jaspreet and Gulnaz want to make sure they have enough plates. If a plate is used once per person, and there are 1,000 people attending, but only 750 plates available, what is the minimum number of times each plate must be reused so that everyone gets a plate?

  4. Estimating and Rounding:
Suppose at the end of the lunch, they count and find 994 people have attended.

    • Is it correct to say “About a thousand” people attended? Briefly explain your reasoning.

Model Answers

  1. Interpreting Place Value:

    • "4 Ones + 7 Tens" = (7 × 10) + (4 × 1) = 70 + 4 = 74 packets of wheat flour.

  2. Comparing Quantities:

    • Fewest people ate at: 9:00am (52 people)

    • Most people ate at: 12:00pm (508 people)

    • Explanation: Compare all given numbers; 52 is the smallest, 508 is the largest.

  3. Reasoning with Large Numbers:

    • They need to serve 1,000 people with only 750 plates.

    • Minimum times each plate must be reused:

      • Each plate must be used at least: 1,000750=2 times (since 1,000÷750=1.33, and you round up).

      • Answer: Each plate must be used at least 2 times.

  4. Estimating and Rounding:

    • Yes, it is reasonable to say “about a thousand” because 994 is very close to 1,000, and when rounding to the nearest hundred or thousand, it rounds to 1,000.
